Maybe you’re trying super hard to stay on top of your self-care game, but it’s usually the first thing to get cut from your schedule if we’re being honest. You know that things with your health could be better, and you like the idea of more holistic approaches, but it’s all so overwhelming so you push it aside for later. #aintnobodygottimeforthat

I’ve got a truth bomb here for you sister. You ready?

Here’s the rub – our standard defintion of “self-care” usually conjures up images in our heads of luxurious bubble baths, lounging by the pool drinking champagne, or getting a deep tissue massage at some swanky spa. I’m not here to tell you that those things aren’t self-care. And they for SURE have their place in life (#treatyoself). But I am here to tell you that self-care goes FAR beyond what might look great on the gram.

What if I told you that self-care actually looks like…

  • cleaning your bathroom
  • learning to mother yourself first, before your kids
  • making that annual trip the gyno
  • speaking kindly to yourself
  • eating your greens
  • setting healthy boundaries around your precious time
  • NOT having lunch with that toxic friend from high school

Think about how you feel when you accomplish those things. Maybe you feel energized and confident. Like you can take on the world. Aligned.

Guess what, my friend?

See? Not as complex as you thought.

Well babe, you can. Because I did.

Let me tell you a little story. I have always thought of myself as a healthy person. I went to the gym, did lots of hiking, and usually worked 3-4 jobs at a time so I was always on the go. I’ve been vegan or vegetarian for most of my life and took my vitamins and tried to drink enough water.

Which is why it was such a shock when my body started shutting down me in my mid-20’s. You can read more about my story here, but suffice it to say that between a rare stomach condition, massive weight loss, and depression, the outlook for my “healthy” life was pretty grim. Looking back now, it’s really not that surprising at all given my constant state of busy-ness, chronic stress, and lack of personal boundaries.

After exhausting all efforts with my medical team, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Maybe it was denial, or anger, or a sort of rebellion, but I was determined not to let a diagnosis dictate how I lived my life. I chose to start taking ownership of my health, and everything changed.

Today I am the healthiest and happiest I have ever been. I’ve made some major lifestyle changes, but they happened one baby step, one tiny little shift at a time. I ended up learning how to take actual care of myself in a way that was holistic, heart-centered, and healing.

And that’s why…
