10 Ways to Clean with Lemon Essential Oil

Switching out the harmful ingredients in your cleaning supplies for non-toxic options can make a huge difference in your health. Research links many household cleaning products to respiratory issues, digestive problems, mood imbalance, and skin sensitivities. Lemon essential oil acts as a powerful cleaning agent and is a super versatile tool to have in your cleaning cabinet.

Here are 10 of my favorite ways to use Lemon essential oil for cleaning.

1. Microwave.

Microwaves are notorious for being tough to clean, especially after mishaps involving spaghetti sauce or tomato soup. I attempted to reheat curry not too long ago, only to have it explode everywhere. To ease the pain of cleaning, simply microwave a cup of water and a few drops of Lemon for 2 minutes. The steam and Lemon will help to lift the stuck-on gunk and make wiping it clean super easy.

2. Stainless Steel.

To an 8oz spray bottle, add 1/8 c. white vinegar, 1 tsp. bakins soda, and 10 drops of Lemon essential oil. Add hot water to fill, and gently shake to combine. Spray on any of your stainless steel surfaces and wipe clean with a soft cloth for a streak-free shine.

3. Stove Top.

Because it acts as a natural degreaser, Lemon oil is my favorite thing to use to clean our stove top. I whip up an easy spray with water and a few drops of essential oil and just spray the whole thing down. Easy cleaning, and no risk of adding harmul toxins to our food.

4. Appliances.

From dust to greasy food spills, appliances collect more dirt than you might think. A simple solution of Lemon oil, water, and a splash of vinegar will help you clean toasters, refrigerators, mixers, coffee pots, and more.

5. Garbage disposal.

Ok so we don’t have one of these anymore. But when we lived in our sticks-and-bricks home I would clean our disposal once a week this way so I think it’s good to share here. Just shake some baking soda down your drain, add 5 drops of Lemon, and then pour a little white vinegar over the top. Watch it do it’s magic science experiment things, and then run your disposal with hot water until clean.

6. Ceiling Fan.

What is it about fan blades that makes them magnets for dust? I swear every time I look up at ours there’s a thick fuzzy layer just sitting on top, no matter how often I clean them (ok, I could be more consistent with this but still). Place a few drops of Lemon oil on your dust rag to help the dust to your cloth, and add a fresh scent.

7. Stickum-Removal.

We all have that one item that we bought awhile ago and still can’t seem to get the price tag off. Or maybe you left your band-aid on too long and the adhesive just won’t come off. Simply place a few drops of Lemon essential oil wherever you need it less sticky, and the oil will dissolve the gunk.

8. Trash Cans.

Regularly cleaning out trash cans can eliminate odor. For indoor trash cans, spray the inside and outside of each can with a mixture of water, Lemon oil, and vinegar, then scrub with a sponge. I also like to add Lemon oil to a few cotton rounds or a paper towel and place at the bottom of the trash can, before putting in the liner.

9. Windows and Windowsills.

The same mixture of Lemon oil, water, and vinegar in a spray bottle that you’ve been using all around the house will do wonders for your windows and windowsills. Simply spray the glass and wipe with a clean cloth or paper towel, then move onto ledges and sills with a toothbrush or damp rag.

10. Air Vents.

One of the most overlooked areas to keep clean in your home is the air you breathe! Clean your vent covers with a sponge dipped in warm water and Lemon oil to help eliminate allergens and dust from the air around you.
